System Requirements

The minimal requirements for setting up the Filetransfer Appliance are

  • i386 type system (All variants of Pentium and compatible processors are fine, including VMware)
  • SCSI or IDE cdrom when installing on a physical system. The OpenBSD bootloader does not support USB cdroms unfortunately.
  • 4 Gb of hardrive space. This will not leave a lot of room for data, but is adequate for a simple test installation
  • 384 Mb of RAM

The recommended configuration for the Filetransfer Appliance are

  • i386 type system (All variants of Pentium and compatible processors are fine, including VMware)
  • SCSI or IDE cdrom when installing on a physical system. The OpenBSD bootloader does not support USB cdroms unfortunately.
  • At least 16Gb of harddrive space (or to cover as much data as needed + approximately 1Gb for system files)
  • 512 Mb of RAM

Server Hardware Compatibility

The base operating system for the Filetransfer Appliance is OpenBSD which was selected for its security, general stability and overall quality. Installations on dedicated hardware, using the ISO image, requires that the system is compatible with OpenBSD. For general systems, there are rarely any problems as the OpenBSD hardware support is generally very good. Please see the OpenBSD hardware compatibility list for a complete list of supported hardware.

Client Compatibility

To operate the Filetransfer Appliance, a system with a recent browser is required.

Browser type Supported Version Comments
Mozilla Firefox 2+ Requires a CA signed certificate from a public CA if used over https. Will likely work with older versions as well, but no testing is performed.
Internet Explorer IE6+ There are some visual glitches in IE6. Version 1.3 of the Filetransfer appliance will drop support for IE6.
Safari Safari 3+ Other webkit type browsers like Google Chrome will likely work as well, but are not tested
Others Not tested The Filetransfer Appliance tries to adhere to modern web standards. If the browser supports modern web standards, it's likely going to work
Browser Plugins Comments
Adobe Flash Adobe Flash version 9.0.28 or later is required to send files.

Certificates

When using the Filetransfer appliance with SSL/https connections, it's important to use a CA-signed certificate. There's an incompatibility between Firefox, Adobe Flash and invalid/self-signed certificates.

You will get a “Server(IO) Error” every time you upload a file in Firefox if the certificate is not valid. There's unfortunately no fixes that can be done with the Filetransfer appliance except installing a valid certificate. This only affects Firefox.

When evaluating the Filetransfer appliance, please install a 30 day demo certificate from RapidSSL to resolve this issue.

For production systems, any valid CA-signed certificate will work. Please see the Installing Certificates section for more information.
